Experts in News: Steve Austad and Jessica Hoffman win George C. Williams Prize
Congratulations to AFAR experts Steven N. Austad, PhD and Jessica Hoffman, PhD for being awarded the George C. Williams Prize from the International Society for Evolution, Medicine and Public Health (ISEMPH).
Dr. Austad is AFAR’s Scientific Director.
Dr. Hoffman is a 2016 Glenn/AFAR Postdoctoral Fellowship Program for Translational Research on Aging recipient.
The prize recognizes the best paper published in the journal Evolution, Medicine and Public Health in 2018. It commemorates noted evolutionary biologist George Williams, who wrote perhaps the most influential paper in the evolutionary biology of aging in the 20th century, “Pleiotropy, Natural Selection, and the Evolution of Senescence.”
Austad and Hoffman’s award-winning paper explores trade-offs between early life fitness and late life mortality, where wild animals show a negative relationship between reproduction rates early in life and extended lifespan.
