Teams can clearly achieve more success than individuals in many cases, yet the value of teams can be elusive when we don't capitalize on the science of development and formation that lead to high performance. Too often teams fall short of the touted excellence of teams because communication breaks down, some members don't pull their share of the weight, or conflict precipitates disengagement–or even dissolution. Interdisciplinary teams have tremendous benefits including enhanced creativity, advantages of multiple perspectives and realization of complex solutions. However, too often unfamiliar expectations and differences in communication and norms make these teams rife for misunderstanding, conflict and disappointment.
This seminar will present best practices on establishing a firm foundation for success in your research teams. The focus will particularly be on interdisciplinary teams. Drawing from the vast literature on team science, Holly H. Brower, Ph.D. will share key principles for setting standards in the forming stage of research teams. This webinar will present a widely used tool, a team charter, and explore:
• reaching consensus on purpose and specific goals
• establishing clear expectations
• addressing conflict
• setting accountability

Holly H. Brower, PhD
Associate Professor, Wake Forest University School of Business
Dr. Brower is recognized as a scholar in organizational behavior and consultant on strategic planning, leadership, team building, leading change efforts, and trust building. She has taught courses in Organizational Behavior, Human Resources, Leadership, Nonprofit Leadership, and Ethics to undergraduate, MBA and Executive MBA students at Purdue, Butler and Wake Forest Universities, as well as in international programs in Germany, Austria, and Nicaragua. Her research publications can be found in the Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management Learning and Education, Harvard Business Review, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Management, Leadership Quarterly, and Journal of Leadership and Organization Studies.
Jay Magaziner, PhD, MSHyg
Director, Center for Research on Aging, University of Maryland; Professor and Chair, Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, University of Maryland School of Medicine; Baltimore, MD
Dr. Magaziner is an internationally recognized expert in the epidemiology of aging, with specialization in recovery from hip fracture and other acute, disabling conditions. He has been conducting interdisciplinary research in aging for more than 35 years.
